Welcome to Carbon County

On Utah’s US-6 corridor between Salt Lake City and Moab, Carbon County is canyon country with a coal-and-rail soul — a place where ancient rock art, frontier history, a thriving arts town and wide-open backcountry all sit within a short drive of one another.

Price is the county hub: museums, dinosaurs and the gateway to the high desert. Just up the canyon, Helper has reinvented itself as one of Utah’s most charming arts towns — galleries, murals, a craft brewery and a lively Main Street. Wellington opens the door to Nine Mile Canyon, the “world’s longest art gallery” of ancient petroglyphs.

South and west, the San Rafael Swell and Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry reward backroad explorers, while up high the cool waters and dark skies of Scofield Reservoir draw anglers, boaters and stargazers all year.

Whether you follow scenic byways, historic Main Streets, blue-ribbon trout streams or canyon rims, every route leads to an authentic experience you can only find in Carbon County.

Coal, Rail & Canyon Country

A Brief History

Long before the highways, this was a land of farmers, rock-art carvers, railroaders and miners from across the world. Carbon County’s story is written in its canyons, its rails and its tight-knit towns.

Pre-1300s
Ancestral Fremont people farm the river valleys and carve thousands of petroglyphs in Nine Mile Canyon — today called “the world’s longest art gallery.”
1875–78
Winter Quarters, near Scofield, opens as Utah’s first commercial coal mine, drawing miners over the Wasatch Plateau.
1879
Mormon pioneers settle along the Price River; the town of Price is named for Bishop William Price.
1883
The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad is completed through the county; Helper rises as a rail town, named for the “helper” engines added for the steep climb to Soldier Summit.
1894
On March 8 the Utah legislature carves Carbon County from Emery County — named for its rich coal deposits. Price becomes the county seat.
1900
A mine explosion at Winter Quarters (Scofield) kills about 200 — one of the worst mining disasters in U.S. history.
1900s–20s
Coal companies recruit workers from across Europe and Asia; Helper becomes known as the town of “57 Varieties.” The 1924 Castle Gate disaster claims 172 more.
Today
Coal-and-rail heritage now shares the stage with canyon recreation, a thriving Helper arts scene, museums and dark-sky country along the US-6 corridor.

Celebration Season

2026 Events

Here, every season has a reason to gather — winter carnivals on Helper’s Main Street, summer rodeos and festivals in Price, fall harvest celebrations and county-wide music. A year-round sampling; full, current dates live on the site.

EventEventassets/images/events/modal/internationaldays.jpg
EventEventassets/images/events/modal/helperartsfest.jpg
EventEventassets/images/events/modal/desertthunder.jpg

Winter Winters are for gathering indoors and out — Helper lights up its historic Main Street for Christmas Town, anglers head to Scofield Reservoir for ice fishing, and the county’s museums make for warm, story-rich afternoons.

Spring Spring quickens the pace: museums swing their doors open, the first rodeos and youth events fill the fairgrounds, and longer days bring festivals, fun runs and get-outside energy across the towns.

Summer Summer is the full-throttle season — the Carbon County Fair, PRCA rodeos, dirt-track racing at Desert Thunder, Price’s International Days, Helper’s Arts Festival and Saturday Vibes, plus farmers markets and live music nearly every weekend.

Fall Fall brings harvest vibes and hometown flavor: fossil and heritage festivals, crisp-air fun runs, Scofield’s golden aspens, and spooky-season museum tours as the high country cools.

Before You Go

Plan Your Visit

Getting Here

Carbon County sits on US-6, about 2 hours southeast of Salt Lake City and 1.5 hours north of the Moab national-parks corridor. Price is the hub; Helper, Wellington, Scofield and the Carbon Corridor gateways spread out from there.

When to Visit

Spring through fall is peak for canyons, festivals and fishing; winter brings snow play, ice fishing and Helper’s lit-up Main Street. Many small museums and outdoor sites are seasonal — confirm hours before you go.
